2014 Burns Prevention in the APY Lands

The BurnSafe team, including, Bethany, Jackie, Doraleen and Warren, engaged the APY communities of Pipalyatjara, Murpuitja, Ernabella, Fregon, Mimili, Indulkana in June 2014. The purpose of these community visits was to highlight the dangers of burns and the importance of burns first aid. The BurnSafe team spent 8 days in the APY Lands driving more then 3,500kms to deliver this successful safety program to children ranging from 4 to 17 years old.

1. REMOVE
Remove any clothing and jewellery from the affected area to allow effective cooling of the burn.
2. COOL
Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes - this will stop the burning process and also help ease the pain.
3. COVER
Cover the burn with a clean lint free cloth or if it is a large area, cover loosely with cling wrap to lessen the chance of infection.
4. SEEK
Seek medical advice if the burn is larger than a 20 cent piece or on the face, hands, feet or groin area.
