SA Health

The Royal Adelaide Hospital Adult Burns Service is the only burns service in Australia which is verified by the American Burns Association and is the only adult burns service in South Australia. The RAH burns centre's catchment area includes South Australia and the Northern Territory, parts of WA, QLD and NSW.

Aboriginal people are almost 25 times more likely to suffer a severe burn injury, spend longer time in hospital recuperating and have additional challenges during outpatient treatment due to distance and cultural aspects. Remove any clothing and jewellery from the affected area to allow effective cooling of the burn.
Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes - this will stop the burning process and also help ease the pain.
Cover the burn with a clean lint free cloth or if it is a large area, cover loosely with cling wrap to lessen the chance of infection.
Seek medical advice if the burn is larger than a 20 cent piece or on the face, hands, feet or groin area.
