Erik Metanomski - Chair

Erik Metanomski joined the Burns Trust Board in October 2006. Sydney based, Erik was the Managing Director and Founder of MMC Asset Management – one of the leading funds Management Companies in Australia.

Erik began his career in London and also spent time in the United States before Founding MMC Asset Management in Adelaide. Erik has taken his wealth of experience and become a highly respected Funds Manager and was awarded Morningstar’s Best Performing Funds Manager in 2003.

We farewelled Erik at the end of this year but sincerely thank him for his expertise and guidance in establishing and growing the Burns Trust.

Peter Edwards

Peter joined the Burns Trust in 2007 and is Managing Director of the Victor Smorgon Group located in Melbourne.

He is a businessman and entrepreneur currently investing in bio fuels and other sustainable resources including recycling waste and the farming of Blue-Fin Tuna and hydroponically grown truss tomatoes, both in South Australia.

Peter has also followed his grandfather, Victor Smorgon AC in the area of philanthropy through the Victor Smorgon Charitable Fund.

Peter is married to Monica and they have three young children.

Prof Peter Maitz AM

Peter is the Burn Unit Director of the Concord Hospital in Sydney and the current President of the Australian and New Zealand Burn Association (ANZBA). As a burn professional Peter brings an outstanding knowledge and medical expertise to the Burns Trust Board.

Peter has also represented his home country, Austria in the Winter Olympics in 1984.

Sheila Kavanagh OAM

Sheila is a previous past Vice President of the Australian & New Zealand Burn Association and has been the Nurse in Charge of the Royal Adelaide Hospital Burns Unit since 1996. In this position she has helped lead the Burns Unit twice in achieving the prestigious position as the only American Burn Association Verified Burn Centre outside of North America. Sheila was part of the Burns Assessment Team (BAT) sent to Darwin in October 2002 to assist in the care of the survivors of the Bali bombing and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in recognition of her services.

Joining the Board in June this year, Sheila brings an in-depth knowledge of the National and International burns landscape to the Burns Trust Board and will assist us in further developing strong relationships with the burns community.

Sheila is a co-founder and life member of the Burns Trust and was an influence on Julian in setting up the Trust in 2003.

Matthew Bickford-Smith

This year, we farewelled Matthew Bickford-Smith who has been a long standing Board member since 2009, providing strong leadership and strategic guidance on the Board. We sincerely appreciate and thank Matthew for his Board involvement and wish him all the very best.
